Halfway Home Rescue at PetSmart, North Haven, CT

Maggie needs a home that will be moderately active- she loves to play. She gets along well with other dogs, and we think she would do fine with cats with proper introduction. Halfway Home Rescue Inc. is a 5013 non-profit organization, started in 2004.

This organization is fantastic and completely transparent. I was approved immediately based on my application. I see some of the complaints on here and to be honest, most of them seem more like random comments/questions, otherwise people who are upset they were denied. I can sit here and say that my experience was not only great, but brought comfort. Once you really research this organization, you see how much time is invested into these animals. I adopted a dog who had a major medical surgery.

Areas Halfway Home Rescue Inc. serves

Olivia came to HHR by way of a local pound after being attacked by a bear. Olivia was critically injured and endured numerous surgeries and more than a month in the hospital to save her life. Since November of 2008, Halfway Home has been a PetSmart Charities Adoption Partner and now occupies the adoption center in the North Haven,CT.

It was OUR choice to give a home to an adult/senior dog and knew once the dog was under our ownership that anything could happen. Unfortunately, Charlie didn't live very long after we adopted him. He saw our personal vet after already being cleared from HHR's vet. We also decided to get a second opinion on his condition and didn't rush to euthanize him.

How do I adopt?

Thankfully, after months in foster care, Rustie is playing beautifully with other dogs. He still cowers around overly energetic dogs that play rough, so any other dog in the home must be gentle and non-alpha. You can find a list of adoptable cats on their Petfinder. We got our beautiful chow chow from halfway home and we couldn’t be happier.

We currently have items like a matching mug + cat dish, catnip pillows, cat stationery. Donations can be dropped off anytime we’re open or mailed to our cat cafe. Some shelters require you to schedule a home visit to ensure a suitable living environment for the new animal. If you need to provide contact info for your vet, let your vet know ahead of time. Otherwise, they may not release your information.

Contrary to some of the reviews, this organization is very thorough and does a fantastic job finding homes and providing medical care to all of the animals at this shelter. We followed their lead on everything and maintained in contact with them after the adoption. It seems to me that people just think they know better and then don't reach out to the organization in a timely manner. He was medically cleared by the doctor and we were made aware of his heart murmur. We knew that with adopting an older dog and him being a purebred from unknown circumstances that it was quite possible that his time with us could be limited.

Adopt a pet from a pet shelter by locating it through our pet directory. If interested in meeting any of our available pets, please visit our website to complete an adoption application. Taylor is about 3 years old and weighs 40 lbs.

We contacted HHR and felt that we were all on the same team on trying to do what was best for Charlie. Whether it's an older dog or a puppy, anything can happen when an animal leaves the care of the originator. We have seen countless friends purchase puppies from breeders and end up losing hundreds of dollars spent on an animal due to parvo. You took the easy road and wanted to point fingers. We did what it took to save Charlie even if it meant us having a few more days to say goodbye. Do you honestly think that a NON-PROFIT rescue organization is going to have abdominal scans done on every animal when not showing symptoms?

All donations are tax deductible and we would be extremely grateful for your support. She is spayed, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, microchipped, feline leukemia/FIV negative, and is current on flea/tick preventative. Quinn came to our shelter when her time was up at a municipal shelter. She is a friendly, playful girl looking for a home to love her. Quinn would be a perfect family kitty but must be adopted to a home where she will have a feline playmate. Ryder came to HHR by way of a high-volume GA shelter where his time was running out.

They are very dedicated to each and every animal and want to best . What I loved most about this group was they were honest! They told me what characteristics of my dog were in need of improvement and that my dedication to her training would determine her success of bettering those traits. Some people may label that as "rude", but I think people only want to hear what they want to hear. I loved my dog for who she was, but I knew I could make her even better of a dog.

In the meantime, here's some nice-to-know info that applies to nearly every animal shelter, humane society, and rescue. Cats, dogs, rabbits & small animals at Halfway Home Rescue Inc. His first adopters allowed him too much freedom inside their home and did not socialize him with other dogs at all.
