The picture walls in the Secret Annex

anne frank house photos

The photo shows Luna Cruz Perez (14) playing the part of Anne Frank in 'her' room on set. The Anne Frank House, in collaboration with Every media, launched the YouTube series ‘Anne Frank video diary’. This is a photo of the set that was specially built for this series, since filming on location in the original hiding place is, for various reasons, not possible. The set was made up of the main rooms of Anne's former hiding place, life-size with correct measurements and  furnished based on sources at hand, such as Anne's Diary and the scale models. Obviously Anne did not record every item in the hiding place in her diary. To give visitors an impression of what the rooms in the hiding place looked like furnished, Otto Frank commissioned a scale model, one of each floor.

Looking around inside Anne Frank’s former home on Google Arts & Culture

Read the story about the Frank family home and take a digital glimpse in its rooms with the presentation of the Google Arts & Culture Institute. The house is inhabited and therefore not open to the public. The Anne Frank House acquired the house in 2017 and lets it to the Dutch Foundation for Literature, which invites a new ‘refugee writer’ to live there every year. These ‘refugee writers’ are foreign writers who cannot work freely in their own countries.

Why Visit the Anne Frank House

They lived a happy life, until the Netherlands was occupied by Nazi Germany. After going into hiding in 1942, they would never return to this address. After the Frank family had left, several other families lived at Merwedeplein 37-2. In 2004, housing cooperation Ymere, in collaboration with the Anne Frank House, restored the house to its original 1930s style. After careful research, furniture was selected that could have been used by the Frank family. As a visitor, you experience this story through quotes, photos, videos, and original items.

The only moving images of Anne Frank of 22 July 1941 were shot here, when the girl living next door was getting married and Anne Frank leaned out of the window to see the bride and groom. It was in this house that Anne started writing in the red-chequered diary that she got for her thirteenth birthday. Here you can see the original red-checked diary Anne Frank received for her 13th birthday on 12 June 1942. A few weeks later, the Frank family had to go into hiding. She dreamt of becoming a famous writer and journalist. In 1957, the Anne Frank House organisation was established, and its main purpose was to restore the dilapidated building and open it up to the public.

What To See When Visiting Anne Frank House

He died in Vienna about ten years later, in 1972, aged 61. Victor Kugler was one of the people who helped hide Anne Frank and her family and friends during the German occupation of the Netherlands. In Anne Frank’s posthumously published diary, “The Diary of a Young Girl,” he was referred to under the name Mr. Kraler. The war was winding down rapidly – the Allies were already in Brussels, Belgium – but there was time for one last train to Auschwitz.

Accommodations like this 2-bedroom apartment in Jordaan and The Blossom House Amsterdam are good for small groups of two to four people. In the age of TV and the internet, the film medium grants it the power to leave an impression on younger and younger audiences. Anne Frank movies serve not only as adaptations of her life story but also as significant cultural artifacts that perpetuate her memory and messages to a diverse, global audience. Upon purchasing Anne Frank House tickets, guests are provided a specific time slot for entry.

The Tragic Consequences of War

Leave your luggage at your hotel or at the luggage deposit at Central Station. This will prevent you from possibly not being able to enter the museum. For the series a replica bookcase was built and the space was made to look like an storeroom for files and records.

Within the walls of the Anne Frank House, the silence, as physical as the floorboards, marks the absence of a voice that once resonated with hope and youthful exuberance. I also was especially moved at seeing the actual bookcase that hid the entrance to The Secret Annex. I literally gasped when I encountered it, and was fascinated by the volumes in the case. When I saw it my heart skipped a beat, as it does every time I view a photo of it. Anne was very wise and mature for her age – she was only 13 when she received her diary.

Anne’s writing, accompanying pictures and memorabilia, paint a haunting prelude to her untimely death. Her legacy, encapsulated within the diary pages and the memories held within these walls, continues to challenge us to build a world devoid of the senseless hatred that led to her downfall. The journey from the secret annex to the tragic conclusion began when the hiding place of the Frank family was betrayed. The arresting Gestapo officers led Anne and the others away, thrusting them into the harsh reality of German concentration camps.

Tickets for Anne Frank’s House must be bought in advance. The museum is small and only a limited amount of people is allowed in at one time. This means you should buy your tickets as soon as they are available on the official website. Containing a stove and dining table, during the day the living room was where the family spent time together and at nighttime this shared space was made into the bedroom for Otto, Edith, and Margot Frank. The Secret Annex is where all eight people lived in secret. Tucked away over the kitchen of the office and below the attic, entering the annex feels as though you’re stepping back in time to 1942.

On hearing this plan, Anne set about rewriting her diary. Her dream was to become a well-known writer and journalist. This revised version of Anne’s diary is made up of 215 pieces of paper. Anne wrote about spending time in the attic, here she would chat with Peter, look out of the window at the blue sky, the clouds and the tree in front of the building. The Van Pel’s son Peter slept in a cramped room at the bottom of the stairs that led to the attic.

Otto decided to save at least the height marks, the map of Normandy, and Anne’s pictures. He cut out the wallpaper with everything on it and stored it in a safe place. Anne’s diary, which she received on her 13th birthday and wrote in while hiding, is one of the most powerful exhibits in the museum. The original diary, along with other notebooks where she penned her thoughts, dreams, and fears, are on display.

Anne saw Peter as a boring and dull person at first but the two soon became good friends, they even shared their first kiss in Peter’s bedroom. Otto Frank’s office, for instance, was where he would listen to the radio and meet with this other colleagues. Today, the office features displays of personal items and documents. Since it was first published, the diary has solid many millions of copies and has been translated in over 70 languages. In August 1944 the family’s worst fears became a reality.

The set of the Anne Frank video diary allowed us to show you what the rooms would have looked like when Anne and the others were in hiding there. In the next photos you will first see the original room  in the actual Anne Frank House and after that what the same space looked like on set, furnished. This is the bedroom of Hermann and Auguste van Pels, which was also used as living room and kitchen for Anne and the others. The group spent around two years living in the annex and Anne spent her time writing about her life, her mundane days, her hopes and dreams and everyday thoughts in her diary.
